Haunted Poveglia History – Poveglia and The Hospital

Poveglia

The history begins when a hospital was built on the Poveglia Island for the ill in 1922. The doctor of the hospital performed rigorous experimentations with the patients since they started out to see the dead. The doctor was then pushed from the top of the Poveglia bell tower by unseen hands. According to that same legend, he survived the fall, but was 'strangled by a mist that came up from the ground'. Its ruins remain to this day. Passing at night, you can actually hear that Poveglia bell tower toll, though not a single soul is on the creepy land of death. The Poveglia bell tower, along with most of the buildings on the Poveglia Island, still stands. It rings quite frequently.

To step foot on the Poveglia Island is to bestow fearfulness to your feels. You walk amongst ash, or what many believe to be human ash. You feel breaths upon your neck and feel your hair stand on end. And once in a while you frequently question if that is really screaming that you hear. You also feel an imminent danger, and a need to get off the island. At one point you see moving shadows that make you wondering what that is. You may not believe inwards haunts, merely there has something about the Poveglia Island that is different feeling and will make you believe in something.

On the other point of view, Poveglia was like many others a shelter for the populations of the mainland that escaped as a result of the barbaric invasions, but with the come one of Pipino in the 809, people of the island were forced to go itself some. It wants the tradition then that the island ripopolasse thanks to 200 veneziane families to the service of the Doge Peter Tradonico who, after its killing, barricapt itself in the Ducale Palace in order to ask justice.

In order to resolve the problem the new Doge, Partecipazio Bear granted to the families the same island that is Poveglia and many privileges. This community magnified itself quickly, but because of the war of Malamocco the island newly was abandoned. Lost its importance like city center, the island divenne in a 1700 contagious plague disease hospital and later on a place where came ricoverate the persons in quarantine.

Yet, still there are tales of a supernatural origin, which simply states that the island of Poveglia was actually created from the ashes of the dead who are buried there. Many people have actually mentioned that they have heard the cries of the tortured, the howls of the insane and the screams of the damned fill the late night air. It is said to be an actual place of horror where the locals refuse to venture anywhere near its vicinity.

In present day, the island of Poveglia is distinguished by its low hump and tall tower, the spire bell tower of San Vitale that was once part of Venice's defence system and can be seen from the remains of Malamocco on the Lido.

Nowadays the Poveglia Island is used as vineyards and other cultivations. Poveglia is not visitable and is not open to tourists.
